As I was seated down today, I started asking myself what really makes me feel secure?.
The Bible tells us not to worry about tomorrow, but because we are humans, we go ahead and worry.
I realized there are certain things which make us feel secure. Our bank accounts, our jobs, our businesses, our academic achievements, our personal physical achievements among others. The biggest worry we have as human beings, is our tomorrow. We want to know that tomorrow we will still have our jobs, our businesses. We want to be sure that tomorrow we will still be strong, we want to know that tomorrow we will be able to put food on our tables, send children to good schools/ go to good schools. We want to know that tomorrow we shall be able to pay the bills and replace the old items we have at home.
As we go through life everyday, we find that we have no choice but to spend what we have sweated for and have to work harder to replace it so as to meet our needs tomorrow. The fact that our needs are going to be there always calls for earning and working everyday. The moment one relaxes in this process of replacing what has been used for the day, then tomorrow, there will be something missing. The desire to know what tomorrow holds is very strong in our human hearts in that many even try divination just to know what tomorrow holds.Others kill, cheat, betray, just to make sure tomorrow is better. It is so human to think about tomorrow because we are even told that tomorrow belongs to the hands of those who prepare for it today. But then, Jesus comes in and tells us not to worry about it!!!!! Now I ask myself, what is the logic behind this? .......Oh, I'm forgetting God's ways don't require human logic. But still the desire to be better tomorrow is still there inside me. The desire to know that tomorrow I will have a meal, I will have a roof over my head, and the rest.
I want to know tomorrow is going to be better, and Jesus is telling me not to worry about what I will eat, put on......tomorrow??!!!!!. But to seek first the kingdom of God and it's righteousness and everything will follow?!. Hmmm!! Jesus is telling me to first pray every morning, to love everyone everyday, to forgive, to give to whoever has need as I can possibly be able to. He is telling me to have faith in God above I don't even see, He is telling me to fast sometimes, to trust God in my finances, relations and businesses? To go to church and fellowship, to repent and turn from my sins? He is asking me to first do all this coz this way and many more ways, I'm seeking the kingdom of God and it's righteousness so that everything I desire may follow me today and tomorrow? How convincing?!!
But then, as I sit longer and meditate more, the spirit of God starts to reveal the truth about this norm of worrying about the future and Jesus' words of letting tomorrow worry about it's own because today has got it's own as well. I start to realize that tomorrow is not yet here, but today is. And also, today was the tomorrow I worried about yesterday. Now, if I don't show love today, tomorrow I'm going to have no friend. If I don't go out and work today, tomorrow I will have no meal. If I don't pray and fast today, tomorrow I may host demons and misfortune. If I don't fellowship today, tomorrow I will be so empty. I start to realize that by worrying about tomorrow, I forget to take care of today. Because, for sure I cannot change tomorrow if I don't change today. I will not enjoy tomorrow if I don't enjoy today. If today I have my job, I will only do my best so that tomorrow if it's gone, I will have reaped from today's sweat and can carry on tomorrow. I don't need to worry and fear tomorrow, I just have to prepare and get ready for it. Everyday is a gift from God to help us be happy today and also prepare for tomorrow.
Today I don't have lunch, but I'm alive. Meaning, I have a chance to make sure tomorrow I have lunch. Not by worrying and getting afraid of tomorrow, but by doing what I can possibly do with God's help to be ready for tomorrow. And when Jesus tells me not to worry about tomorrow, I will believe.Because HE can see tomorrow which I can't see. He has also given me today to utilize so as to face tomorrow. I come to a conclusion, my security should not be in my fat bank account, my security should not be in my degree, masters, P.hd. My security should not be in my job today or my business. My security should not be in my connections. Because these are all for today. Tomorrow I may not have them or they might not be able to help me live. My security should be in God the most high, who gives me each day to live and make things happen. God, who enables me utilize what I have gained. God, who knows what tomorrow will be like. If my security is in the earthly things I posses, then I will always worry and fear tomorrow because these don't last. But if my security is in God the most high, then I have no fear in tomorrow because God never changes.
